🐘 Kaziranga – A Jungle Straight Out of a Movie

As the sun rose over Kaziranga National Park, a soft mist covered the grasslands, creating an almost dreamlike scene. The air was filled with the sounds of chirping birds, rustling leaves, and the distant call of a rhino.

Nothing prepares you for the first sighting of a one-horned rhinoceros 🦏. These prehistoric-looking giants move with an elegance that contradicts their bulky appearance. Spotting one just a few feet away from my elephant safari was nothing short of thrilling!

But Kaziranga is not just about rhinos. Elephants, swamp deer, wild buffaloes, and even the elusive Bengal tiger call this place home. The park is alive with nature’s drama, where predator and prey live in a delicate balance.

The jeep safari felt like a scene straight out of a wildlife documentary. Racing through the tall grasslands, stopping at watering holes, and watching herds of deer grazing in golden sunlight—it’s the kind of adventure that leaves you breathless.

And just when I thought Kaziranga couldn’t get any better, I visited the Kaziranga Orchid & Biodiversity Park 🌺. A riot of colors, a display of Assamese culture, and a chance to witness rare orchids blooming—this place is a hidden gem!

🏞️ Shillong – A Melody of Nature & Culture

Leaving the wilderness behind, Shillong welcomed me with rolling green hills, cool mountain air, and a vibe that felt refreshingly different. Known as the ‘Scotland of the East’, the city is a mix of colonial charm, Khasi traditions, and breathtaking landscapes.

One of the most mesmerizing sights? Umiam Lake. Imagine a vast expanse of water, surrounded by pine-covered hills, reflecting the colors of the sky. A simple boat ride here felt like floating through a painting.

Shillong isn’t just about scenic beauty—it has soul. The bustling Police Bazaar is a sensory overload of street food 🍜, handicrafts, and the latest fashion trends. The music scene here is legendary 🎸, with local cafes often hosting live performances that give the city a laid-back, bohemian charm.

Then there are the waterfalls. 💦 From the towering Elephant Falls to the hidden cascades tucked away in the hills, Shillong feels like a place where water and earth dance together in harmony.

🌿 Cherrapunji, Mawlynnong & Dawki – Nature’s Untamed Beauty

A short drive from Shillong takes you to Cherrapunji, one of the wettest places on Earth. Here, waterfalls don’t just fall—they roar. Nohkalikai Falls, India’s tallest plunge waterfall, crashes down into an emerald-green pool, creating a sight so surreal it feels almost mythical.

But the real magic of Meghalaya? The Living Root Bridges. Imagine crossing a bridge that wasn’t built but grown over centuries by the Khasi people using the roots of rubber trees. It’s a testament to the deep connection between the locals and their environment.

Then there’s Dawki, home to the Umngot River—where the water is so clear, boats look like they’re floating in the air. Sitting in a wooden boat, gliding over this crystal-like river, surrounded by towering cliffs—it’s the kind of peaceful moment that stays with you forever.

And finally, Mawlynnong, Asia’s cleanest village. It’s more than just its cleanliness—it’s a place where sustainability isn’t a trend but a way of life. Bamboo walkways, flower-filled pathways, and a community that truly cares for nature—this village is proof that harmony between humans and the environment is possible.

  🚗 Alternative Airport: Jorhat Airport (JRH) – 97 km away (only a few domestic flights operate).

  By Train 🚆

  The nearest railway stations are:

  • Furkating Junction (FKG) – 75 km

  • Jorhat Railway Station – 90 km

  • Guwahati Railway Station – 200 km

  From these stations, you can hire a cab or take a bus to Kaziranga.

  By Road 🚗

  Kaziranga is well-connected via NH37. You can reach by:
  ✅ Private Taxi or Rental Car from Guwahati, Jorhat, or Tezpur.

  By Air ✈️

  The nearest airport is Shillong Airport (SHL), Umroi, located 30 km from the city. However, flights here are limited.

  🚗 Best Option: Fly to Guwahati Airport (GAU) (120 km from Shillong), then take a shared taxi, private cab, or bus to Shillong.

  By Train 🚆

  Shillong does not have a railway station. The nearest station is Guwahati Railway Station (GHY), 100 km away. From Guwahati, you can:
  ✅ Hire a taxi or rent a car (takes around 3-4 hours).
  ✅ Take a state-run or private bus from the Paltan Bazar Bus Stand.

  By Road 🚗

  Shillong is well-connected by road:
  ✅ From Guwahati (100 km, 3-4 hours drive) via NH6.
  ✅ From Kaziranga (250 km, 6-7 hours drive) via NH37 & NH6.
