Tourism around the world is buzzing with major developments—from reopened sacred pilgrimages and new travel routes to growing concerns about over-tourism. Here’s a roundup of the most important travel and tourism news making headlines today
Tourist Fear Grows After Pahalgam Attack, Kashmir Sees Sharp Drop in Visitors
In the wake of a tragic militant attack in Pahalgam’s Baisaran meadow on April 22, 2025, that claimed the lives of 26 tourists, Kashmir’s once-thriving tourism industry is facing a sharp decline. What was once one of the most sought-after summer destinations is now experiencing mass cancellations and a rising wave of concern among travelers.
According to local authorities and tourism industry experts, the attack has sparked fear and uncertainty, prompting tourists to rethink their travel plans. Over the past two years, Kashmir had steadily regained its reputation as a peaceful and picturesque vacation spot, drawing thousands of visitors each month. Tour operators noted a marked increase in domestic travel to the region, particularly during peak seasons.
However, the recent violence has drastically altered travel patterns. Many holidaymakers are now choosing destinations in other hill states like Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Regions such as Kullu, Manali, Darjeeling, and Dehradun have seen a noticeable rise in inquiries and bookings in the past week alone, as tourists look for safer alternatives to spend their vacations.
“We were fully booked for Kashmir until mid-May, but since the attack, we’ve seen over 60% cancellations,” said a Delhi-based travel agent. “People are now asking for packages to places like Mussoorie, Nainital, and Shimla instead.”
Hoteliers and local business owners in Kashmir are also feeling the impact. Many say the sudden drop in footfall has disrupted their seasonal business plans and revenue expectations. Several operators have expressed concern that if security fears persist, it could take years to rebuild confidence among travelers.
The aviation sector is not immune either. Air travel to Srinagar has dropped sharply, and airlines are already reporting a dip in seat occupancy on routes connecting major Indian cities to Kashmir.
Despite assurances from local security agencies and efforts by the Jammu & Kashmir administration to tighten safety protocols, the psychological impact of the attack is evident. Many tourists, particularly families, are choosing to err on the side of caution.
Authorities are urging travelers not to generalize the situation and to stay informed through official sources. However, for now, the fear factor continues to overshadow the region’s natural beauty and long-standing appeal.

Himachal weather: May snowfall on Lahaul peaks mesmerises tourists; wet spell leads to plunge in mercury
DHARAMSHALA: Fresh snowfall blanketed the higher reaches of Lahaul-Spiti district in Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday (May 6, 2025) morning while intermittent rain continued in the lower regions, intensifying the cold in the valley even in the month of May.
Cloudy skies were also reported from several areas of Kullu, adding to the unusual weather pattern.
Despite the cold, the region is witnessing a steady surge in tourists, especially those arriving in large numbers from Manali to enjoy the late spring snowfall. With the rest of the country reeling under summer heat, the cool climes of Lahaul-Spiti have become an attractive destination for travelers.
Tourist influx rising steadily in Manali
Many visitors are opting for excursions through the Atal Tunnel towards the Lahaul valley, exploring its scenic locales and extending their journeys up to Darcha, which has now been opened to tourists.
The growing footfall is bringing renewed vibrancy to the valley’s tourism sector, providing a much-needed boost to local businesses. Tourism stakeholders in Lahaul said hotel and homestay bookings were increasing and they expected a full-fledged tourism season after May 15.
Strong western disturbance active till May 10
The Indian Meteorological Department has said a strong western disturbance is expected to affect the region from May 6 to 10, bringing widespread rain.
An orange alert has been issued for Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi and Shimla on May 6 and 7, with the possibility of gusty winds (40 to 50 km/h), lightning and intense showers.
A yellow alert is in place for the remaining districts, including Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur and Kinnaur, where adverse weather is also predicted. However, skies are expected to clear by May 8 in these areas.

On midnight of May 7, the Indian Armed Forces launched Operation Sindoor, a series of precision strikes targeting nine terror launch pads and camps across Pakistan
In the wake of the heart-wrenching April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 innocent lives, India has responded with decisive military action. On midnight of May 7, the Indian Armed Forces launched Operation Sindoor, a series of precision strikes targeting nine terror launch pads and camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK).
The attacks targeted known safe havens of terror groups responsible for cross-border infiltration and attacks on civilians, including the one in Pahalgam. According to intelligence sources, high-value targets were neutralised, and multiple facilities used for training and arming militants were destroyed. As per reports, These strikes were conducted using a combination of long-range artillery, drones, and guided munitions, with the Indian Air Force and Army working in coordination.
Despite the recent tragedy, the resilience of both the Indian security forces and the public remains unshaken. Tourists currently visiting Pahalgam have expressed deep gratitude and support for the Indian Army.
“We are visiting Pahalgam fearlessly as the Indian Army is with us,” said one tourist, standing near the Lidder River, surrounded by the valley’s spring bloom. “Another operation should be carried out to finish them (terrorists). We feel safe because we know the Army is watching over us.”
